The Business of Healthcare: Burnout’s Iceberg
“What is powerful is when what you say is just the tip of the iceberg of what you know” – Jim Rohn
The recent Critical Care Societies Collaborative (CCSC) report on burnout, is only the tip of burnout’s iceberg. There is a complete disruption in the healthcare industry due to shifting reimbursement models that has caused a cascade of reactions across all strata’s of the healthcare delivery systems. Electronic health records, swiping bar codes, endless updates, training on new technology and equipment, in addition to patient care, is causing a great deal of concern and fatigue among nurses. Nurse management identifies that 30% of nurses leave due to burnout within 5 years of being in a management role. And many hospital systems, themselves are experiencing burnout having the look and feel of an exhausted swimmer reaching for the side of a corporate boat. You can see there is a lot beneath the surface of burnout’s iceberg.
Nurses that are experiencing burnout owe it to themselves to learn about their options.
