How Writing a Book Can Dramatically Help Your Business

By Chris O’Byrne

There are several ways to promote your business; however, many of these ways will cost you a lot of money. You may not have thousands of dollars to spend on marketing in the early stages of your business, but there are still several cost-effective ways to build your brand.

Before the internet, small businesses had limited options to market their products effectively, including handing out fliers or sponsoring local events. Fast forward to the present; there are countless marketing opportunities. You simply need to know where to look.

Writing a book may not be the first thing that crosses your mind when you’re trying to find ways to grow your business. However, several CEOs have proven that writing a book is an option that is worth exploring.

Writing a book has not always been an easy task. Authors would have to find a low-cost printer and would often have to print hundreds of copies that they would then have to store all of those cases of books in their garage, basement, spare room… you get the picture. It was an onerous chore. However, small business owners can now skip this process entirely. Publishing is easier than ever.

An effective book can help you find and connect with your target audience. All it takes is creating the right content and a solid marketing plan, and you’ll be on your way to building your brand and growing your business.

With a plethora of social media outlets, apps, and new ways of marketing, it is easy to get overwhelmed while trying to build your business. Fortunately, writing a book allows you to create content and share your voice in a way that will last forever.

1. Writing a book demonstrates expertise.
Your reputation matters, especially when you are selling to other businesses. Additionally, most customers check reviews before they make a purchase. This is why most businesses promote their awards, certifications, and testimonials on their website and why Google and Amazon reviews matter.

Customers want to know that you know what you are doing. They need to know you are an expert in your field. Writing a book allows you to establish your expertise. Publishing your book on Amazon or other known websites gives customers assurance that you are confident in being the best source of information in your field. Give your audience the confidence that they are making the right choice.

2. A book is a great tool for generating leads.
Most authors go through Amazon to get published. While at the surface, Amazon looks like a bookstore; it is a search engine. When your book is to the point that it is easily found by customers, readers interested in your content are more likely to click any links you include.

3. A book is a great PR tool.
Media outlets are always on the lookout for fresh and interesting content. Publishing your book will be a great public relations tool for your business. A book launch piques a lot of interest, especially if your content is the next big thing.

You can pitch your publishing date as a story to media outlets and land interviews to further promote your book, your brand, and your business. Promoting your book is often easier than promoting yourself or your business. As your book gains attention, so will your business and your brand.

You are not limited to your local newspapers, TV, or radio stations. You can also ask influencers or well-known internet personalities to promote your book. When targeting these outlets, be sure to find someone who is in the same niche as you are. Write something that will convince them to cover you and explain why they will benefit as well. Establish yourself as an expert in your field. Interviews could also result in you becoming their favorite interviewee for future posts, helping you gain even more traction.

4. A book is a very memorable business card.
For an author looking to use their book as a marketing tool, it isn’t about impressing critics or seeking awards. Instead, their book must prove that they are someone with relevant and important ideas. People often forget you if you give them your business card, but it will be difficult for them to forget you if you give them your book. It will be on their bookshelf forever, and they will remember you every time they see it.

Let’s say one person throws their business card and another throws their book in the middle of the table at the beginning of their meeting with investors. Guess who will be more memorable? The person who threw their business card or the person who went over the top and threw their book?

5. A book helps people find you.
Businesses often forget how powerful Amazon is. As of 2021, Google is the number one search engine; number two is YouTube. Do you know what number three is? You guessed it. Amazon.

Amazon is not only a major search engine but also an important tool for entrepreneurs. It is the go-to search engine when looking for products. Becoming visible on Amazon goes beyond getting attention. A lot of marketing tools attract your audience’s attention. But they often won’t search for those tools when they are trying to decide which product or service to buy.

When consumers are looking to buy, they turn to experts or professionals. How do you know if a person is an expert? Yes, that’s right. They wrote a book on the topic. A good book brings customers to you, lets people know what you do, and shows them how you can be of service. It’s an excellent marketing tool because it not only builds your brand, it also attracts clients.

6. Writing a book gets people talking about your business.
Can you think of an incredible product you used and you just had to tell your friends about it? Do you remember eating at that fancy restaurant and posting about it on social media because you wanted all your friends to know how great it was?

Word of mouth is the ultimate marketing tool. When someone you trust tells you to buy something, you listen, and you buy it. Writing a book triggers word of mouth better than almost any other marketing tool.

If you can write a book with great value and solve a problem, others will want to talk about it with someone else who has encountered the same problem. Do you know why? Because it makes them feel great. That’s how word of mouth works.

Overall, writing a book is a valuable marketing tool that can help promote you, your brand, and your business. If you are looking to grow your business, break into your industry, and establish your voice and expertise, writing a book is a simple, affordable, and wise way to do this and have an impact that will last a lifetime and beyond.
