Reality Check 2017: Are You Doing or Being?
By Dr. Dolores Fazzino, DNP, FNP-BC, CRNFA
As the previous year closes, a new chapter of your life has begun to unfold. HAPPY NEW YEAR! The excitement of new beginnings and new, clean pages of your future life has come into view just begging to be filled in with new and exciting life adventures. Perhaps you decided and declared 2017 to be your year of big changes filed with exciting new goals for yourself. You jumped right in and have been on a roll since the new year began!
As the new year progresses, the reality of life sets in. The momentum that you created begins to slow or maybe even come to a screeching halt. What has caused your derailment? It is a common problem for many of us. Let me tell you what has happened to your momentum.
You have fallen into the cycle of “doing” your life. Yes, your old patterns of “Doing” what you always have been doing has surfaced and since it is your default button, you give into “doing” because it is comfortable. Does that sound familiar?
Did you know it does not have to be that way? Trust me, all is not lost, and I can assure you that getting back on track is a small simple tweak. It is really about realigning yourself and learning to “be” in your life.
Part of being human is that we tend to make things so complicated, thus distracting us from what we truly desire. What if I told you that it does not have to be that way? In fact, what if I tell you that “doing” less is the more! WHAT A CONCEPT! “Doing less is MORE!”
The western world focuses so much on “doing” that society has become lop-sided and out of balance. We have become “human- doings” instead of “human-beings”. As human-doings, we are in a state of doing and are in automatic mode, often functioning on an unconscious level. We go on automatic pilot and forget that we are here to make good choices that align with our core so as fully experience ourselves in our human state. As a result, health and wellness of humanity has suffered in the complacency of “doing”.
By integrating “Being” into the mix it allows for balance to return. So what exactly is “Being”? Being is a state of allowing, receiving, and experiencing the present moment, right here and right now which allow us to honor and live our core strengths. When we fully experience the fullness of life, we find balance in mind, body and spirit. How do you get into a place of “being”?
Here are 4 simple tools to assist you to return to the state of “Being” in your life.
- Give yourself permission to say “No” to things or obligations that no longer serve you. We forget to get into our life’s playbook and take out those automatic “doing pages” that don’t work for us any longer. When you think about different aspects of your life, do they feel heavy or light? If it feels heavy, consider taking a pass on participating.
- Spend some quality time with yourself, to allow yourself to connect with your inner voice and wisdom. Give yourself permission to detach from your world. Consider setting aside time for a “Date with Yourself”. Spend an hour or so with you, where you can focus on you without distractions such as your phone, social media, and computer. (yes, even eating, or shopping can be a distraction too!) Inner wisdom, which innate to each of us can only be heard when you are “Being” fully present in the moment, so you can connect with that voice within. You may even like yourself more! Learn to meditate!
- Become curious like a child. Explore your environment. If you have forgotten how to do this, observe a child or even a pet. They exemplify curiosity and living in the moment. In situations in your life “Ask what are the possibilities?” Or “What else is possible?” and allow the answers to come to you. Remember you are here to make the most of your human experience!
- Make yourself a priority. Do not let this year go by without a plan for your self-care and human-“beingness”.

I love this! A mentor recently asked, “What do you want to be, do, or have?” I have heard that question many times, but for some reason, the “What do you want to be?” stuck out this time. I’ve decide that in addition to to my daily “To Do” list, I will also have a daily “To Be” list.
