The Bureau of Labor and Statistics said that over 4 million Americans quit their jobs during the month of July. People quitting their jobs at a higher rate than is normal, especially this past spring and summer, is being called The Great Resignation. Obviously, a portion of individuals quitting their jobs are healthcare providers. Since nurses make up the largest number of healthcare providers, there is a significant number of nurses quitting the traditional nursing workforce. How significant? In a recent survey by the American Nurses Foundation during the period of August 2020 through September 2021, 50% are considering leaving their jobs. Out of the 48% of nurses who said they intend to leave their position in the next six months, cited the negative effect work has had on their health and well-being as a top reason.
As more nurses are prioritizing their health and well-being, more nurses will be looking at their options.
