Nurse Advantages in Business
Nurse Advantages in Business
Registered nurses have definite advantages over the general public when they start a business. Nurses are unique in the world of business and some are highly successful with a business income in the multi-millions. Laura Gasparis Vonfrolio made an audio tape titled Making a Million in Nurses. I, for one, started my business after listening to the tape. As I work as president of the National Nurses in Business Association, I realize the advantages I have listed here are just a tip of the iceberg, so to speak.
- Nurses have a college education with a large knowledge base that includes medicine, pharmacology, physical and respiratory therapy, teaching, spiritual and holistic medicine, nutrition, biology, physiology, and record keeping to name a few.
- According to the Small Business Administration, business ownership is the most effective means of improving a women’s economic well-being.
- The United States Department of Labor identifies eight universal job skills in their Occupational Handbook. The skills are leadership/persuasion, problem solving, teamwork, manual dexterity, instructing others, intuition, frequent public contact, and physical stamina. Each occupation in the handbook requires a variety of these skills, commonly four or less. Nursing requires all eight skills. Therefore, nurses can do any job in the United States including being an owner operator of a small business.
- The nursing process is the same as the business process. The process steps are to collect data, develop a plan, implement the plan, evaluate the outcome, revise the plan, implement the plan, evaluate the outcome, and repeat the process. Nurses are experienced and proficient with this business process.
- Nurses are in short supply and in great demand.
- Few nurses realize that they have a talent like any great artist that emotionally demands they practice their art. That talent is the intangible art of nursing. Artists often put up with great adversity to practice their art–giving up food for paint or playing their music in dim-lit saloons without pay. The nurse views herself as a nurse practicing the art and science of nursing. The healthcare facility views the nurse as a labor force to perform tasks and does not recognize the art of nursing. That lack of insight by the healthcare facility creates a fundamental problem.
- Hospital jobs provide ideal financial support during startup with weekend, night, and part-time scheduling. Many part-time and weekend positions also provide insurance and retirement benefits that are helpful during business startup.
